PCC students sponsored by eSTEM and a grant by the USDA through the Association of Latino Employees embarked on a journey to the annual HACU conference in Washington DC. Along the way they kept tabs on thier journey. Below are the thoughts, photos and postings of 6 students.

HACU represents more than 400 colleges and universities committed to Hispanic higher education success in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Latin America, Spain and Portugal. Although our member institutions in the U. S. represent less than 10% of all higher education institutions nationwide, together they are home to more than two-thirds of all Hispanic college students. HACU is the only national educational association that represents Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs).

Resume meetings and tech meetings are in full swing!
Just got my Tumblr set up with the tech gurus!

HACU is coming up at light speed! I can’t wait!

An adventure awaits

I would have never guessed that I would be going on a trip like this one,
not only is it in Washington D.C. but it’s the Annual HACU conference!! I
will definitely keep an open mind an a confident attitude. I hope to meet
like minded individuals, as well as network with professionals who want to
help students out. But there is much to be gained; I wouldn’t know where to
start!

HACU conference, here we come!

Posted

Finally finished packing and now I eagerly wait for what tomorrow will bring! This will be the first time I have ever been to Washington D.C. and I am so excited to meet new people and possibly go sightseeing. Though I do not know what the HACU trip will be like, I have feeling this will be a good growing experience for us. I personally can’t wait to see all the science internships and research opportunities the HACU 2012 conference has to offer.

Goodbye Los Angeles, hello Washington D.C.!

Time written: 9 a.m.
Location: somewhere in the air…
Now playing: Kaskade - Essential Mix

Alright, I’m writing this in flight. We took off about 15 minutes ago. As a
first time flyer, I must say this is pretty entertaining (even though I’m
squished between two random people. It’s all good though!). This flying
thing is something a little euphoric. Take off was amazing! The thrill of
hearing the turbines spool up with their delightful whine in unison with
that “shoot you to the back of your seat” sensation. As we lifted into the
sky I got a little woozy for a second seeing how it was an uncommon
experience for me…anyway, everything is going well thus far, plus the
scenery is intense. I feel like I am living Google Earth!

P.s. Thankfully I have some pretty snazzy headphones that were gifted to me
the other day by a good friend. They have effectively silenced the crying
baby ;]

Even though we went to bed late, we were up bright and early to check out
the National Mall. What a sight to see! Pictures and movies hardly do any
justice to these monuments. They are truly captivating and represent our
nation’s past. We are all truly lucky to be a part of this trip.

I love the squirrels in D.C! They are not your ordinary PCC squirrels who run around and mind their own business, nope! These grey and white DC squirrels made me feel welcomed. These squirrels are so friendly they let people pet them! I always wanted to pet one, but when I had the chance I freaked out.

One more thing to cross out of my bucket list! Yup I saw the White House it was pretty cool, although I did not see Obama but that’s ok! It was not what I imagined but it was an amazing experience. I always imagined the White House as this huge place with nothing around it but no I was wrong! The White House was not as big as I imagined and there was buildings right next to it with and a beautiful park in front of it.

The National Mall is amazing! After having breakfast, we headed towards the national mall. I was really excited on going sightseeing because I had never been there before. The memorials and monuments were captivating with there architectural design and detail. I definitely enjoyed the green scenery and the really friendly squirrels.

All dressed up and ready to go! We had a long day yesterday but we got tons
of useful information about scoring internships as well as government jobs
and private corporations that work with government!
We also had time to speak to different organization to find out more
information about them and their internship opportunities! I personally
gave out two résumés which made me extremely happy!

To top off yesterDAY, we decided to explore the city at NIGHT! Before we
left the hotel we made a new friend who ventured from CA to D.C. by
himself. We asked him to join us as we went off into the night! We got to
explore the nightlife in D.C. which is extremely interesting and quite like
nothing I’ve seen before! It was a wonderful night with cool vibes in the
air and in the people!

The first day was quite the success, sight seeing in the morning as well as
the first instalment of the Hacu coneference. I expect nothing less from
today, with actual workshops and more of a chance to network with different
students and organizations.

Handed out a few résumés since we’ve been here. I’ve done my best to make
great impressions with employers and I think it’s beginning to pay off
already! The representative at Aramark accepted my résumé the second time I
spoke to her and she said that she would be in contact with me soon about
the internship programs they offer (with locations in Alaska and
Colorado)!!! Hopefully I can show that I am a excellent candidate!

The concurrent session I like the most today was the “CIA: What Type of Leader are You? Understanding Yourself and Your Leadership style”. In this session they went over the different types of leadership by having us take a survey and solve a problem. The four main styles are driver, expressive, amiable, and analytic. After taking the CIAs peer style survey, I found out that I was analytical. Knowing this has highlighted the areas I need to work on to become a more rounded leader. I hope that the concurrent sessions tomorrow are as helpfully as this one! You can try the survey by clicking the link below.

Composed of properly preparing for interviews; a thumbs up for all the
information given out. I will feel more confident in preparing for future

The last one was focused more on the marketing of personal qualities such
as skill sets and level of confidence.
